We Need to Start Planning... Now

Last Friday I submitted a letter and proposals to the Commission on Enhancing Agency Outcomes, which is set to meet again at 10am on Monday.

When taken together, the recommendations would save over $250 million per biennium (based on OFA estimates) without diminishing the quality of service provided by government. Most of the recommendations will result in a reduction of the state work force, as redundancies are eliminated and functions are transferred to more efficient providers. While the state work force cannot be reduced until FY11 at the expiration of the SEBAC agreement, I believe we need to start planning now.

The stated goal of privatization has is to reduce costs and improve services. I support reducing costs, however, when looking at other states, privatizing social services has done the opposite. While monitoring other states that have privatized social services the fact of the matter is it is full of cost overruns and service breakdowns. Meanwhile, critical decisions affecting our society's most vulnerable citizens have increasingly been based on short-term private incentives rather than long-term public interests.
I am a full time student and a young mother of two who has benefited greatly from the services that the Department of Social Services offers. If the services were to be privatized, I may not have been eligible to receive these services, and may not be where I am today. By being able to use these services, I have been able to attend college and be an addition to the work force. Furthermore, I do not want to see thousands of mothers, fathers and children suffer due to the privatization, nor do I want to see a bigger deficit in our state due to the privatization.
